Hanover Township

About Hanover Township

Located just to the west of Lisbon, Hanover Township lies in the central portion of the county.

Hanover is named after the city in East Pennsylvania from which its founders originated. During its beginnings, Hanover was an important stopping point of the Beaver and Sandy Creek Canal.

This township has a fascinating history pertaining to the Underground Railroad. It was founded by the Quaker James Craig who was a slavery abolitionist. About fifty years later it would play an important role in the housing runaway slaves before they would reach Canada. The house Dr. James Robertson had a secret upstairs room which housed slaves. Today, Hanover is known for its heavy German ancestry.
